The number one thing I’ve been asked over the years is, “Can you help me publish my novel?” (True fact.) But the second thing I’m asked is, “How can I make a living writing?”

I can definitely help with the second question. The first one … yeah, I can help you navigate self-publishing, but I can’t promise you’ll make a living with fiction.

Copywriting is the fastest way to get paid as a writer. That’s just a fact. It’s not immediate, and it takes some skill, but if you’re looking to go from zero to steady income, copywriting is going to be the most straightforward route.

This week, we’re looking at how to get started from the ground up. And I’ve added a bonus download for paid Substack members—more on that below.

If you’re ready to get the details becoming a copywriter, let’s get started!

Subscriber Extra: 3 Areas Where New Copywriters Can Land Work

If you’re building your freelance career and wondering where to focus, here are three beginner-friendly copywriting niches that are in-demand, relatively easy to break into, and not too saturated.

Once you have a basic portfolio and some work samples online, reach out to potential clients in these areas and pitch your services as a copywriter.

1. Personal Development + Coaching

Why it’s great:

  • Tons of solopreneurs are launching courses, programs, and email funnels every day (and if they’re smart, they don’t want to sound like ChatGPT)

  • They need copywriters but often can’t afford agencies (and may not know how to write AI copy prompts even if they wanted to)

  • There’s an opportunity to grow together, and you can get some quick wins and positive testimonials under your belt

💡 What to write:

  • Sales pages for coaching programs

  • Email welcome sequences

  • Lead magnet opt-in pages

🔍 Where to find clients:

  • Facebook groups for coaches

  • Instagram (look for coaches with around 10K followers)

  • Indie creator marketplaces like Contra or Ghost

2. Wellness + Lifestyle E-commerce

Why it’s great:
